With U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie and Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne on his right, Daviess County Judge-Executive Al Mattingly on his left and tons of stacked aluminum ingots behind him, Brian Wright enjoyed a proud moment Tuesday afternoon.
Wright is the president and CEO of the Owensboro Riverport Authority, which is listed as a London Metal Exchange approved delivery and storage facility for primary aluminum and other metals. He announced Tuesday that the riverport has been named a finalist in the annual Platts Metals Awards, which recognizes industry leadership and innovation in several categories.

The Owensboro river-rail-truck terminal, which operates on the Ohio River just downstream from the Owensboro riverfront, is among the six finalists out of more than 100 nominees from 17 countries in the category of Physical Metals Service Provider of the Year.

“The Owensboro Riverport Authority is honored to be selected as a finalist for this distinguished award,” Wright told a gathering of people in the terminal’s Warehouse No. 3, where LME “warranted” aluminum will be stored. A warrant is a document of possession for LME-approved metal held in an LME-approved warehouse.

But in fact, the riverport property is practically covered with acre upon acre of aluminum stored on the ground.

“This nomination is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of the ORA employees in establishing ORA as a key service provider in the metals market on the inland waterways,” Wright said. “The collaboration of our board of directors, management and employees are credited for this global recognition. We are excited about the exposure this nomination will provide for the Owensboro riverport and look forward to the opportunities this recognition will bring.”

The Platts award winners will be announced in London on May 19 at the Platts Global Energy Awards gala. Winners will be named in 14 categories. Berlin Metals LLC, Euromet SA, MidWest Materials Inc., Mill Steel Co. and Owen Industries Inc. are the other finalists for the metals service provider award.

Guthrie said the nomination brings important recognition to the terminal and to the Owensboro community.

“People in London, England, will know what is happening in Owensboro, and that’s important,” Guthrie said. “This award is also important to commerce. Any time your name is mentioned in one of the largest cities in the world, that’s important.”

Payne first thanked Guthrie for his recent contribution to getting the William H. Natcher Parkway eligible for an Interstate 65 spur designation in the federal highway bill.

“Thank you, Congressman, for getting this community on the interstate system,” Payne said.

“We are getting known in the state and the world,” Payne continued. “It is happening on all fronts, bringing worldwide attention to our community. I don’t think any one thing will brand Owensboro-Daviess County. A lot of things will brand this community. Everybody in Owensboro-Daviess County is pulling together to move this community forward, and it is a great thing. It is an exciting, exciting time, and I’m so pleased that people in London, England, will be hearing about this community.”

Mattingly called the riverport a “hidden gem” that is playing a key role in the regional economy.

Platts, founded more than 100 years ago, is the commodity information arm of McGraw Hill Financial and the benchmark source for prices, news, data and informations for biofuels, carbon emissions, coal, electricity, natural gas, metals, nuclear power, petrochemicals, shipping, sugar, grains and other agriculture products used in making ethanol and other biofuels, according to a riverport news release. Platts, headquartered in London, has customers in more than 150 countries.
