Located on the Ohio River, a major transportation corridor on the United States Inland Waterways System, the Owensboro Riverport Authority is an excellent location for riverborne commerce and water-based industrial development. Navigation on the Ohio River is continually being improved by the construction of new and larger locks and dams under the supervision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This continuing modernization effort has already made great strides in promoting more efficient and cost effective freight transportation for the Ohio River Basin and its neighboring states.

The Owensboro Riverport Authority was established in 1966 by the City of Owensboro for the purpose of developing riverfront facilities and developing land to attract river-oriented industries. The Authority officially opened a $5.6 million public river terminal in June 1976 emphasizing its experience, performance, and excellence. Strategically located on Ohio River mile point 759, this 285-acre site presently has over 500,000 square feet of on-site general commodity warehousing, 10 acres of paved outside storage capacity, 100 acres of compacted rock outside storage capacity, domed bulk storage of 14,200 tons, 22,500-bushel-per-hour grain loading facilities and storage capacity of handling 690,000 bushels of grain, two 110-ton capacity cranes with one located on a spud barge, and a full array of loaders, forklifts, and specialty equipment. The facility has six mooring dolphins and tug/fleeting service is available 24 hours a day. A liquid tank farm was constructed in 2010: three two million gallon tanks were erected with site excavation completed for additional tanks.
